The new president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has sworn to acquaint GDPR-style legislation to oversee artificial intelligence (AI). Ursula von der Leyen has made the following comments on this pledge by stating, “With the GDPR, we set the pattern for the world. We have to do the same with artificial intelligence. It is not about damming up the flow of data. It is about making rules that define how to handle data responsibly. For us, the protection of a person’s digital identity is the overriding priority.”
Van der Leyen additionally promised to investigate new manners by which big data can be utilized to create wealth for business and societies. She also stated that she would attempt to prioritize investment in AI through the Multiannual Financial Framework just as with the increased use of open and private associations.
Regarding the matter of technological sovereignty, von der Leyen encourages both people and organizations alike to accumulate resources, money, research potential and knowledge and to incorporate it all into practice.
The newly formulated GDPR-style legislation that Ursula von der Leyen has vowed to bring about is potentially going to be established by Margrethe Vestager, who has taken a tough stance against companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook since she became the EU Competition Commissioner in 2014.
In 2016, Vestager demanded that Apple pay €13 billion in unpaid taxes. In 2018, she fined Google of an all time penalty amounting to over €4.34 billion over claims of anti-competitive practices. This fine that was handed to Google was based on its revenue from search and advertising.
