Last Thursday, June 16, our traditional Risk & Compliance Annual Congress took place at the Groot Kievitsdal Estate in Baarn. The weather was beautiful and all those present could fully enjoy it on the terraces of the Estate. But of course there was also the serious angle, the theme around the role of the gatekeepers in 2022. The three keynotes before the break each had a clear opinion about this from their own background. The international bank customer, through the CEO of HVA International Miltiadis Gkouzouris, started off, after which Jaap van der Molen of the ABN Amro Bank spoke and then the Ministry of Justice and Security, represented by Zosha Zuidema. Later in the afternoon, the Great AML/CDD/KYC Debate took place, led by Michael van Woerden. Geert Vermeulen, who led the day in the right direction, was our chairman.
As mentioned in the introduction, the subjects were treated very seriously. The debate with the experts of the panel was also very substantive, starting with the introduction by lawyer Ellen Timmer. The panel members and the public were able to express their views on the three statements, which led to an interesting confrontation between some panel members. In addition to Ellen Timmer, these were Zosha Zuidema, who previously spoke on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Security, Martin Wörsdörfer (Chairman Holland Quaestor), Michelle Fisser (Board Member of the Association of Compliance Officers, VCO) and the independent researcher Pieter Lakeman of the Foundation. SOBI.
After the tea break, but before the Big AML/CDD/KYC Debate, there were three different break out sessions, from which the participants could choose. The session delivered by LexisNexis was about “Why Supply Chain Due Diligence and the (negative) news is important for the value of your company”. Deloitte’s was on “The perspective on how technology can be misused for crime and used to prevent it” and Protiviti’s third was on the topic “The current time cannot do without highly trained KYC/CDD Officers”.
The evening program, after the networking drink on the terraces of the Estate, started around seven o’clock with the network dinner. The first dinner speech came from Medy van der Laan, in her capacity as President of the Dutch Banking Association. The second dinner speech was animated by the well-known trend watcher Adjiedj Bakas.
As usual, several interviews were conducted for Risk & Compliance TV, and the video will soon be available on our website. A special word of thanks goes to our technicians, led by Glenn Rudolph.
The date for our Risk & Compliance Annual Conference 2023 has already been set, as has the location, which will not surprise you once again: the Groot Kievitsdal Estate in Baarn. The date is Thursday, June 15, 2023. Put that in your electronic diary. The theme for next year is “Innovation and Supervision: Is RegTech the Right Answer?”
