On the 27th of May more than 40,000 runners from 120 different nationalities will occupy the lanes and parks of Brussels, on the occasion of the 20km of Brussels – one of the largest amateur sport events in Europe. Among them will be Team RUN FOR #ZEROCORRUPTION – as you may have guessed this is an initiative from the Belgian chapter of Transparency International. Initiator Evert-Jan Lammers: “The idea came up three years ago at the time of the scandals at FIFA and the Russian Athletics Federation. The Olympics in Rio and the European Soccer championship in France were under preparation. For some years already, Transparency International had its spotlight on the weak governance in the sport industry, and also the increasing problems of match fixing, illegal betting and doping.
In order to draw more attention for our campaign in 2016 we have registered a team for the 20km of Brussels. So, this will be our third year in a row in which runners, well or less well prepared, run in the shirt #ZEROCORRUPTION. We are proud that this year several organizations are actively supporting us, either by running with us or by making publicity for our team. For example the International Anti-Corruption Academy in Vienna, the European anti-fraud office OLAF in Brussels, and the Institute for Financial Crime in The Hague. And private sector organizations that actively promote a corruption-free society such as PwC, Syntra and AB Inbev. The latter sponsor will offer every runner a refreshing Belgian beer on the #ZEROCORRUPTION-terrace of Transparency International, located at the Start & Finish. Family, friends and colleagues are also welcome.”
